Their story and the tragic betrayal that led to their defeat, is being told, written, sung, filmed and memorized endlessly through the centuries to this day.
The chessmenLeonidas (Pawn) is depicted armed for battle, holding his notorious shield with the greek letter Λ (L) engraved. The King represents the famous semi-god hero, Hercules, the son of Zeus, and the Knight of the famous winged horse, Pegasus. The Queen figure is a replica of the famous statue Aphrodite of Milos (200 B.C.) and the Bishop is Apollo, from the Temple of Zeus in Olympia (460 B.C.). The Castle is inspired by the Doric pillars of the Parthenon on the Acropolis (440 B.C.)
